David Cameron buries his personal photographer under Prince William's engagement

This is not bad for David Cameron. Why? Because most voters don’t really care about “U-turns” and “retreats”. They care about politicians listening to — and responding to — legitimate criticism.

When you’re in a hole, the sensible thing to do is stop digging. Mr Cameron has done the sensible thing.

Oh, and announcing the move an hour before news breaks that Prince William is getting married doesn’t hurt either. Shovels can be used to dig holes. They can also be used to bury bad news.
